PAINTINGS
trash trout at the brook trout ball (2019, available)
acrylic and trash over a 1962 Robert wood reproduction found at Goodwill i always wanted to paint a big fish. realizing I neither had the talent, nor patience to create something hyper realistic, I opted towards abstraction. this piece incorporates trash bits I’ve found on my walks around Charlottesville, VA with my dog Monty. broken tail lights, lost dog tags, plastic bags, bottle caps, lottery tickets, Chinese takeout containers, jul pod caps (I think, Idk I don’t do that) & beyond |
stationary scraps sceloporus
(2021, available)
acrylic and scraps of paper from my desk, plus a 17 pennies on a brand new canvas from Michaels
i have a friend, who studies why some lizards have blue bellies, and why some don't.
the layering of different elements in collage to form these colors is like the layering of the iridophores and melanophores that underlie the blue bellied sceloporus.
this piece incorporates scraps of stationary, paper, and old paintings that have been sitting around at my desk, one of them was a note to my friend sally that i forgot to give her and then it got too late. sorry, sally.

(should be orange) eft
(2023, available)
acrylic on recycled canvas from a thrift store, underneath this there is a peacock painting, probably from tj maxx… 40x40 inches
collage elements: parking passes from my old apartment, chopped up old paintings I didn’t like as standalone pieces, Swarovski crystals off of someone’s bedazzled phone case, fabric scraps from a torn floral dress, a few old silk ties that would have killed it in an 80s board room, spare change, unlucky lottery tickets, ect.
I started this painting right after I wrapped up my first field season at Black Rock Forest. I spent all Fall with my eyes flitting from the fall foliage to the forest floors. I was characterizing how orange and red the canopy was turning, jotting it down in my field notebook, and then watching my step to make sure I didn’t step on a red eft. I wondered who decided to call them red efts… I think orange efts would be a better name...

you know when you rub your eyes and you see a mirage of colors? or you're laying in bed with your eyes closed, trying to fall asleep but all you see is TV static that turns from static to a flying giraffe eating soup? thanks phosphenes
